Do you have to use use cards or tools?
In short, no, but if you had to ask that you may need to open yourself up a little more to consulting people you feel drawn to, rather than trying to enforce your limitations of understanding upon others... Especially when it is towards people who have worked in their field for decades. If you are a working psychic with no other day job, and fully supporting yourself by helping people with your time while sharing your gifts, you wouldn't ask that, and you wouldn't need a reading from anyone else.

The three ladies and the tools...
I will never forget the time three ladies booked in and all wanted to sit in on each others readings. They seemed excited to be there and they even said "you pick" when I offered them the opportunity to choose who had their reading first.
I looked at the three ladies and was silent for some time, and then I said "I will read for you first." Having gestured to the first..
The first lady I read for was very pleasant indeed to read for, she received past life info about the connections she had with some other people, as well as I drew her aura, spoke about her gifts that she was developing, correctly naming which senses were opening up for her, helped with understanding some people around her as far as their astrology and also did some colour work with her.
The reading was 15 minutes over the booked hour, and she offered a tip. I was guided to refuse and say that the extra time was a pleasure and a gift from spirit.
I offered them to choose who would be next, they declined, and got me to choose.
The second lady I read for, I went and got a cup of tea, and proceeded to read her tea leaves, read her palms, spoke to her about her passed over loved ones and separately her spirit guides, which master energies were there for her, explained the numerology and name energy of some other people around her and how to work on those relationships, spoke about business ideas and the reading also went 15 minutes over the hour. She also offered a tip, I also repeated the same words guided by spirit, refusing to accept extra payment.
I then looked straight at the third and last lady, and I was silent and serious looking for quiet some time.
She commented how excited she was to have her reading because ( I ) was "so good...! "
Then, while I still looked at her, and did so very silently, she walked across the room to the table and sat down opposite me, visibly excited and smiling.
I was not excited.
I stood up, and brought down every single tarot deck in my collection off the shelf of about 22 decks (one at the time, and stopped to look at her with each deck I drew down off the shelf).
Her expression went from excitement to horror. I kept going. She said nothing at all...
The other two ladies watched all this with intense fascination.
Then I explained to this last lady that when I read tarot cards, I am not reading static meanings on thick pieces of paper... I am seeing the pictures move and speak to me, and it can be like watching a video.
So the cards become like in the photos and paintings in all the Harry Potter movies of magickal people... unlike pictures of muggles which don't move at all.

As I read for her, I explained the "movie screen" effect I experience when reading cards tells me the story about that client's life and what is and is not balanced in their life and thinking. That this way of reading is like scrying, another tool that I indeed work with.
As I continued her reading, I also explained simultaneously the links between the tarot and the elements of nature, the tree of life and numerology and astrology while reading for her, and I also explained where on the tree of life I could see she was sitting presently as far as her life lessons as presently experienced sat and what destructive patterns she was repeating in her life. |

Now, I hope that gives you more insight not only in your life, but also in how it is possible for tarot to be a useful tool in the right hands, and what exactly is possible with tarot beyond basic people's very shallow understanding of it. And that you now understand more about what tarot and tarot readers are and are not and that this understanding is more than what you walked in with. I am told your previous understanding was vastly different to what tarot actually can be if the limitations of one person are put aside, as explained and demonstrated by me for your benefit here and today."
Her jaw dropped in shock. The other two ladies had kept their chuckles fairly restrained the whole way through this last ladies reading, but couldn't contain themselves any longer and exploded with the biggest and loudest belly laughs, uncontrollably and almost on the floor... And, that was when the first lady said "Sorry, it's just so funny, you see for the whole hour after we picked (her) up in my car, and all the way up here she sat in the back seat repeating over an over that "If (you) use tarot cards she would know you were a fake and the reading won't be any good, as she hates tarot cards and tarot readers as they are all full of crap." Still laughing uncontrollably along with the second lady.

Go to a reader you feel drawn to, respect for, and therefore how they work won't really be the issue, as you will have set an intention of being ready to receive the reading you need, regardless of how it is delivered.
