Which tarot card
are you?
You are the Star card. The Star is the light of hope. Shining in the
night, sending light into darkness, the stars provide direction to
sailors and are a field on which to dream. Humanity used to look up at
the sky and desire to be there, to find out what it all meant, and now
we have been a distance into space and have elementary ideas of the
makeup of all the different stars. This kind of achievement adds further
fuel to our hopes. The eternal, slow-moving stars that will be long
shining past the end of our own existence provide hope of immortality,
and the vast space they suggest and the very mystery they hold provide
us with excitement and knowledge yet to be discovered.

Presented April 3, 2004 for the Melbourne International
Tarot Conference 2005 at Dante's "Tarot Cafe" Fitzroy
Exhibited- July 1-6, 2005, Melbourne International Tarot
Conference, Victoria University, Flinders Street, Melbourne
Dimensions- 2metres x 115cm approx
Media-
Acrylic paint on canvas, goat hair on the front, sheep hair on
back, handcuffs, hot pink dummy, wooden spoon, "bad girls of the
bible" CD, fabric eidelweiss flower, 15 safety pins, 2 belts,
glitter, and surrounding the front of the picture are magickal
herbs galore (certainly more than 11 secret ones).
Key
statement-"Charisma and glamoury are the veils used to
seduce, putting minds at ease whilst rocked to sleep in the arms
of the devil. Waking up is the hardest thing to do, but once you
have, you will never be fooled again. Your eyes are forever
open." Jacquelene Close Moore.
Planet
Saturn,Zodiac sign Capricorn.
Description- The Devil is No 15 in the Major Arcana. If you
times 15 to the power of 10, it becomes 150, to the power of
1000 it becomes 15,000 and so on. If you add 1 and 5 you come to
6 which is the Lover's card. Numbers play an interesting part in
the devil, because the devil's loans have high interest rates,
and the balance is always called in early, a reason why you
should never make a deal with the devil. At the bottom of the
ocean an earthquake begins. At this depth, the atmosphere is
crushingly heavy, it is cold, dark and unrelenting, above the
surface it causes a tidal wave. But even at this depth, with the
media in tow, the blonde Devil woman, (a centaur- half
woman-half horse) saunters seductively down the catwalk under
the floodlit aura of a salivating, camera clicking audience. On
the stage in front of her are her two captives. One- a grinning,
crazed gollum-like devil man, leashed by the throat, and between
them - a dead woman. The dead woman lies supplicated and
sacrificed, motionless on the runway. I first painted her hair
red, but the hairs on my neck stood up and I wanted to change
this, so painted the hair a darker colour. Our white-blonde-haired
devil woman seems so obvious, but why can't anyone else see her
as anything but beautiful? It's plain to see - in front of the
whole crowd - her lower half is becoming more marked by her
actions. It is degrading and decaying as she walks. She holds
the reigns on her captives and cracks them like a whip to suit
her mood. How is it that the devil can parade publicly and yet
remain unseen? But let's not have sympathy for the devil. After
all, with the five warrior monkeys in the background, (see,
hear, do, think, and be - no evil) we all know what devil faces
at the other end of the runway! A brown, oddly shaped shadow
pursues her, between her and the monkey warriors. The shade
glides silently, eerily and purposefully behind her. Oblivious
to it's pursuit, she carries on with her parade as her shadow
moves independantly, shapeshifting and changing according to its
own desires. She is the devil! A large amount of writing is on
the back of this piece, along with other depictions, forming a
whole other side to the picture, including predictions which
came true. What started as a statement became a series of
premonitions. But then there are at least two sides to the
Devil...aren't there?

Lesson
contained in the card- We all have our demons. You can
transform and use them positively to live your purpose with
freedom and honesty instead of letting them enslave and rule
you, or drive you out in fear. You overcome the lesson of the
devil by first acknowledging your own demons, seeing them for
what they are, and then laughing at them, rejecting their
control on you without invalidating their purpose in making you
dig deeper to find the worth inside. A champion is only as good
as their opponent drove them to become. The Devil has a purpose
of challenging us until we have no choice but to rise against
it's current, transforming ourselves and setting ourselves free
in the process. Women often attract devil type men when they are
at their lowest point or when they are still a victim of their
circumstance. This is why one should take time to get to know
their lover rather than allowing themselves to become seduced.
We should never have sympathy for the devil! The Devil seduces
some to sleep, yet others open their eyes, see the seduction,
and are forever awoken, and do what is needed in order to
protect themselves. After facing your demons, nothing and no
one can ever fool or overcome you again. The devil card in the
Major Arcana of the tarot asks us to see with open eyes what is
often missed by complacency. What makes the devil aspect of
society and even our own demons thrive? Apathy and complacency.
Edmund Burke was a Capricorn from whom this theory became better
known. The problem with evil is not evil people, but when
good people do nothing. The devil card in the Major
Arcana of the tarot asks us to see with open eyes what is often
missed.
Personal comment- I will never look at the movie "the sound
of music" in quite the same way ever again. You should not
glorify the devil, nor the villan. Some people on seeing this
piece in person have had very strong, violent reactions. ("What's in
there?" Questioned Luke, "Only what you take with you." Answered
Master Yoda.) |
No 6, The Lovers
(Images coming soon)

Presented-February 5, 2005 at Dante's "Tarot Cafe" event,
Fitzroy
Exhibited- July 1-6, 2005, Melbourne International Tarot
Conference, Victoria University, Flinders Street, Melbourne
Dimensions- 180 cms x 115cms approx
Media-
Acrylic Paint, feathers, fabric roses, butterflies and birds,
glitter, and gems
Key
statement- When two hearts beat as one they beat in time and
in tune, increasingly drawn to one another -from the other ends
of the earth if necessary-until nothing and no one-not even
death-can keep them from each other.
Books//legends/dieties focused on during the painting's
inception-
"Perfume-the story of a murderer" by Patrick Suskind, Homer's
"The Odyssey," the legend of Orpheus and Erydice, Aphrodite and
Anubis. From July 2004 I read "Perfume the story of a murderer"
by Patrick Suskind, having recently finished and presented the
Devil painting, and had images of Anubis (the guide through the
underworld and the power of discernment through scent and
hearing) running through my mind. This was the dark and
underworld side of the lovers card, necessary to explore, but
not necessary in this instance to paint. When one person looks
to another for all of their enlightenment and either gives too
much power over or alternately seeks to take it away, disaster
always follows. I wiped this image from my mind, and refocused,
leaving the last painting behind, divorcing myself from its
images. I found a new image from which to paint, as described in
this painting's description. While painting, I reread Homer's
"The Odyssey."
Planet
Mercury, Zodiac sign Gemini.
Description- A top a sunbathed mountain kneels the
babylonian high priestess, cockatoo feathers and quartz crystal
at her third eye. She looks to the heavens above, holding out
her hand to her one true love, a viking, who takes her hand and
climbs the last few steps to the peak to reach her. He needs
into reach to her wisdom in order to also bathe in the sun's
rays. He can't look directly at the sun, and so looks to her. To
one side of the peak lies a barren waste land and thorny
thicket, to the right, all manner of life blooming, fruiting,
buzzing and flying. Rain drops glisten and trickle down the
painting adding life sustaining moisture to the landscape on one
side, and on the other not a drop of dew nor rain, just barren
parched earth. Watching over them, swoops an angel so bright and
light it gently blends with the sun. It's wings like sun rays
stretch out to enfold above, below and around them. The angel is
Raphael, the colours of Raphael conatined within the piece. A
song came to my mind as well, the words to which I wrote but are
not for public display. The song speaks of the sea and how while
an adventurer ventured out into the great unknown above the
water, he was aided silently by Halimede the Naiad-Nymph, though
travelling together they were divided by the water. Swimming
under his boat beneath the waves, she drew him to the water and
guided him safely. There are those who travel the world to find
themselves, and yet others who travel the depths within for the
same outcome.
Music

Kabbalic link- The letter Zain-sword-discrimination.
Lesson
contained in the card- Gemini searches for it's twin or soul
mate. Gemini often externalises in its quest for enlightenment,
where a search within is what bears the fruit. Orpheus and
Eurydice can teach you alot about this card. Hence why Anubis
played a part in its inception. You cannot reach the mountain
peak without a deep search inside, and by bringing together the
two opposite sides of yourself. Big choices must be made and
illusions overcome in order to bring yourself to wholeness. The
lovers are naked because they do not need to hide anything from
each other. The sacred Marriage is that of anima and animus, the
masculine and feminine principles, an intergration and melding
of your two sides or poles. You should listen to your heart and
have the courage to follow through on your dreams.
Personal comment-Our entire survival on this planet depends
on our ability to be more loving. There is no more powerful
magick than love, love within and without.
